What is Bratachari?

The word “Education is derived from the Latin word educatio (“A
breeding, a bringing up, a rearing") from educo (“I educate, I train”)
which is related to the homonym educo (“I lead forth, I take out; I
raise up, I erect”) from e- (“from, out of”) and duco (“I lead, I conduct”).

Plato said that: Education  “Develops  in the body and in the soule
(of the people) al the beauty and all the perfection of which he is capable
of’.
Education should allow the oppressed to regain their humanity and overcome their condition.
In the year 1932, to develop Physical – mental, Moral and social life, to be a good citizen of the country as well as of the world, a new movement started in the Bengal as well as in India by an Indian Civil Service officer.

Name of the movement is “Bratachari “ . This movement is essentially a youth movement and promotes the basic Principle of life and discipline through songs-dances, rhythms and music. The principles are taken as vows on ideal and practice of good citizenship. ‘Broto’ means vows and ‘Chari’ means one who follows those vows. One can not “do” Bratachari rather one becomes a Bratachari. The five Bratas of life are (1) Knowledge, (2) Labour, (3) Truth, (4) Unity, (5) Joy.

The objective is to follow the ideals not compartmentally but in an integrated way so that the complete development and the wholeness of life is attained. Founder of this Bratachari movement is Gurusaday Dutta. He used to be the District Magistrate of the Birbhum District of West Bengal. To teach teachers and students, he used to organise one month training camp. The campers used to practice the songs and dances which were composed by him or collected by him during his extensive travel across the country.
A song, composed by him, he explained the Bratachari movement:-

Bratachari builds the body
Makes the sprite free
Let us therefore young and old
All Bratachari be.
Knowledge, labour, Friendship
Truth and joy will be our aim
Through work and play and
Dance and love
We will lean to play the game.

This movement is binding Hindus and Moslems, Christans and other communities together in a deep bond of harmony and mutual fellowship as no other movement is able to do.
It does not divide the culture of India or of any regions of India into Hindu culture and non-Hindu culture.

After witnessing the Bratachari Movement , Rabindra Nath Tagore says: “May the Bratachari movement soon spread through at the length and breadth of the country. I feel confident that whenever it is adopted, it will conduce to the development of Joy of spirit, capacity for work, strength of character and enthusiasm for social service”.

This short introduction about the Bratachari can be achieved with a song, where there is an open invitation for all of you to ‘be’ a Bratachari. The song is composed by Gurusaday Dutt, commonly known as Guruji.

Be a brata – chari and see
How this earth is full of bliss
If you aren’t a Bratachari
Half the fun of life you miss
Come and work hard
Come and play heard
Come and lough and dance and sing
Zest of life and joy of soul will
Make you happier than a king.
Ja-So-Ba, Ja-So-Bha, Ja-So-Bhu.
